Hormone Therapy for Transgender and Gender Diverse Adults in Portland, Oregon and Beyond: What to Expect

Gender-affirming care, including hormone therapy, is a vital component of health and well-being for many transgender and gender diverse adults. This care looks different for everyone—it may mean starting testosterone or estrogen, adjusting existing therapy, or simply having a safe space to discuss gender and health. A growing body of research shows that gender-affirming care improves mental health, reduces suicidality, and enhances overall quality of life. Leading medical organizations—including the American Medical Association, American Academy of Family Physicians, Endocrine Society, American Psychiatric Association, and World Professional Association for Transgender Health—affirm the importance of access to gender-affirming treatment as evidence-based, medically necessary care. At PridePoint Health, we provide inclusive, expert-led hormone therapy grounded in this evidence. Whether you’re just beginning or continuing your journey, this guide explains what to expect.

We Provide Gender Affirming Care Throughout Oregon and Washington.

How Does Gender-Affirming Hormone Therapy Work?

Hormone therapy involves testosterone or estrogen-based treatments to support gender expression that aligns with your identity. The specific medications and dosages are tailored to each individual’s goals and medical needs.

  • Masculinizing Hormone Therapy (for those seeking more masculine characteristics) typically includes testosterone. This can lead to voice deepening, increased muscle mass, body hair growth, and stopping the menstrual cycle.

  • Feminizing Hormone Therapy (for those seeking more feminine characteristics) typically includes estradiol and an androgen blocker. Changes may include breast development, skin softening, body fat redistribution, and reduced facial/body hair growth.

    • See a full list of feminizing changes with expected timeline for onset and completion of changes.

Who is Eligible for Hormone Therapy?

At PridePoint Health, we follow an informed consent model, meaning you do not need a letter from a mental health provider to start hormone therapy. Instead, we provide comprehensive education on the risks, benefits, and expected changes to ensure you can make an informed decision.

Eligibility typically includes:

  • Being 18 years or older

  • Having the capacity to provide informed consent

  • No medical contraindications that would make hormone therapy unsafe
