Frequently Asked Questions

DIRECT PRIMARY CARE MODEL

  • Direct Primary Care (DPC) is transforming healthcare by offering patients a direct, no-hassle connection to their physician through an affordable monthly membership. By cutting out insurance intermediaries, DPC streamlines the process, saving time and resources that get invested back into what matters most—your care. With no endless forms or insurance red tape, doctors can focus on delivering high-quality, patient-centered healthcare, the way it should be.

In the traditional healthcare model, doctors are typically overloaded with over 2,500 patients, squeezing in 10-15 minute appointments while juggling piles of insurance paperwork. This often means rushed visits, long waits for answers, and even longer waits to get an appointment. It’s a system built for volume, not for quality care.

At PridePoint Health, we do things differently. We work directly for you, not insurance companies, and maintain a much smaller patient panel. This allows us to offer longer appointments, quick scheduling (often within hours or days), and truly personalized care. By cutting out insurance barriers, we also help you save money with access to wholesale pricing on labs, imaging, and more. And while our focus is on streamlining your primary care, you still have the flexibility to use your insurance for medications, specialty care, or anything outside of our services.

Our membership model eliminates the frustrations of traditional insurance-based healthcare, making your experience simpler, more affordable, and focused on what really matters—your health.

  • While there are similarities, direct primary care (DPC) is not concierge medicine. Both offer personalized care with smaller patient panels, same-day or next-day appointments, longer visits, and direct communication with their doctor. At PridePoint Health, we provide concierge-level care without concierge-level prices. We operate on an affordable flat monthly fee, covering nearly all primary care services without involving insurance so we can truly focus on our patients. In contrast, concierge medicine charges higher fees with annual retainers and often bills insurance, resulting in higher costs. This also brings the focus back to navigating insurance billing and red tape, rather than what's most important--your health. Concierge medicine targets financially affluent individuals, while DPC is designed to be accessible and affordable, offering comprehensive care to a broader audience.

  • A few of the many benefits include:

    • Enhanced access – Say goodbye to long waits and rushed appointments. With direct care, you get longer visits, same or next-day appointments, and direct access to your doctor when you need it.

    • Cost transparency – No more surprise bills or confusing medical costs. With direct care, you know exactly what you’re paying, with no co-pays or deductibles. You won’t need to shell out thousands to meet your deductible just to access high-quality, all-inclusive care.

    • Patient-driven care – Experience healthcare where your doctor can truly focus on you. Build a real relationship with a doctor who knows you and your health goals. With no insurance barriers or job changes to worry about, we’re here to ensure you always have access to the care and medications you need—because we answer to you, not insurance companies.

    • Small, community-based clinic - When you choose us, you’re not just getting excellent care—you’re supporting a small, local LGBTQ business that truly cares about its community. In a healthcare world dominated by big corporations where decision-makers are far removed from patient care, we stay personal, compassionate, and community-focused.

GENERAL & MEMBERSHIPS

  • We understand that healthcare costs are a major concern, and not everyone can keep up with the rising expenses in the corporate healthcare system, where multiple stakeholders drive up costs. That’s why we embraced the direct primary care model as a more affordable alternative. Our membership often costs less than your daily coffee or phone bill, and many of our patients actually save money compared to traditional healthcare. With no copays, no inflated surprise bills, all visits included, and wholesale pricing on labs, it’s a smarter way to manage your health. Plus, you’ll enjoy same or next-day appointments, direct access to your doctor, and longer, more personalized visits. Our mission is to make high-quality care accessible and affordable—read on to find out how we can fit into your budget!

  • Yes! Pairing your insurance with our Direct Primary Care (DPC) membership can actually save you money. With DPC, you avoid the inflated costs of insurance-driven healthcare, saving on copays, surprise bills, and deductibles. By paying a simple monthly fee, you get all-inclusive primary care without the financial stress that comes with navigating the traditional healthcare system. Pairing DPC with a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) can save you more than $300 annually, and nearly $2,000 when compared to a standard gold insurance plan with a low-deductible—for more details, check out our full breakdown of cost savings.

Beyond saving money, you gain far more value for your dollar —enhanced access to your doctor who actually knows you, no wait times, unrushed visits, a long list of included services, convenient lab testing and discounted, wholesale prices on labs and imaging. It’s an investment in better health and better care.

  • Do you feel frustrated with the current healthcare system? Are you hesitant to see a doctor because of the high cost? Have you ever been hit with a surprise bill weeks after a visit? Do you want a long-term, meaningful relationship with your doctor? Do you feel like there are too many barriers between you and the care you need? Would you appreciate same-day or next-day appointments that actually start on time? How about handling simple issues over email, text, or phone with your doctor?

If any of this resonates with you, PridePoint Health could be a great fit.

  • We offer different memberships to provide tailored care for specific needs, such as PrEP and STI care or gender-affirming care. We recognize the distress of not knowing if your provider is experienced or even comfortable managing gender affirming hormones or discussing sexual health in a non-judgmental way. These memberships allow us to deliver essential services at a lower cost for those who don’t need comprehensive primary care. This also ensures continuity and personalized care without interruptions to your prescriptions. We offer a discounted rate of $89/month for those that wish to combine both PrEP and Gender Affirming memberships.

For those seeking full primary care, our DPC membership includes all services from the PrEP and Gender Affirming Care plans.

  • Absolutely! We will be there for you if you're get sick, hurt, or other health issues arise. We also work proactively to keep you healthy, free of preventable diseases, and living a lifestyle of wellness.

It's hard to break out of the mindset of the insurance-based healthcare system where everything is centered around responding and treating illness after it starts. Insurance companies rarely reimburse for the time and attention needed to detect early warning signs of diabetes or to encourage a lifestyle change to decrease risk of heart disease. Doctors just aren’t supported in the traditional health system to effectively prevent disease and promote all-around good health.

By the time you're being treated for a chronic disease, it can be too late. By joining PridePoint Health when you're healthy, you’re investing in the path to stay healthy. Spending your healthy years under the watchful eye of a doctor that cares optimizes your chances to remain in good health and avoid chronic disease.

  • Of course! Our clinic welcomes people from all backgrounds. While we specialize in providing supportive and affirming care to the LGBTQ+ community, we are committed to offering high-quality healthcare to everyone. Our doors are open to all individuals seeking comprehensive, personalized medical care, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, sex, body size, race, ethnicity, national origin or religious affiliation. We believe in creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for all our patients.

  • To keep things simple and consistent for all of our patients, we do not provide visits or care outside of our standard membership system.

  • Yes, there is a minimum commitment of 3 months. Our goal is to build long-term, trusting relationships with our patients. To ensure we provide the highest quality care, we invest significant time and resources in the intake and onboarding process. This initial commitment allows us to get to know you and your healthcare needs, ensuring a solid foundation for personalized care moving forward.

BILLING & INSURANCE

  • If you decide to cancel after your first 3 months, just give us a 30-day notice—no hassle. If you’ve signed up for an annual term and choose to cancel, we’ll simply refund the remaining balance of your membership. We’re always here to make the process smooth and straightforward for you!

  • HSA and FSA debit and credit cards are accepted. We take check, cash, credit card, debit cards and ACH. For more specifics on HSA/FSA funds, please consult your accountant.

  • No, direct primary care is not an insurance plan. The monthly membership is for comprehensive, all-inclusive primary care services. See our list of services included in your membership.

  • While we don’t bill insurance directly, you can still use your insurance for healthcare outside of our services, such as medications, lab work, imaging, and specialist referrals. Our membership model is designed to simplify your primary care experience, eliminating co-pays, deductibles, and surprise bills, while providing you with personalized, comprehensive care. Many patients find that our all-inclusive care, coupled with wholesale pricing on labs and medications, helps them save money—even with great insurance.

  • While a well-trained primary care physician can provide up to 90% of your healthcare needs, we do recommend pairing DPC with a low-cost health plan that covers for unforeseen major health events. This is similar to how we think about car insurance. We pay out of pocket for affordable, preventative maintenance and repairs, but carry insurance to limit financial risk in case of unforeseen catastrophic events, such as a major car accident. This is a more efficient, cost-saving model that avoids the unnecessary administrative and financial burdens of dealing with insurance companies. These companies are incentivized to maximize your premiums and limit your payouts, which creates a lot of headaches for you and your mechanic when all you want is an air filter change.

We apply a similar model, allowing us to save on time and overhead costs and pass this on to our patients by providing far more value.

  • Absolutely. Although we recommend everyone carry high deductible insurance or health sharing coverage, we do not turn anyone away due to lack of insurance. At PridePoint Health, we do our best to make comprehensive primary care affordable for those with or without insurance.  We pack a lot of value into your membership. Our Direct Primary Care memberships include as many services as possible in your plan and get you wholesale pricing on labs and imaging studies, with discounts ranging from 50-90% off.

  • PPO (preferred provider organization) and POS (point of service) plans work well in combination with direct primary care as there are no restrictions on specialty referrals or lab/imaging orders. HMO (health maintenance organization) plans are not ideal, because they’re more restrictive and require an “in network” assigned primary care provider for orders and referrals to specialists in their network. We can work with you if you are in an HMO, but you will likely need to find a PCP that is willing to transcribe orders and help with referrals.

High deductible health plans (HDHP) under your PPO or POS work best, as these plans typically save you hundreds of dollars in monthly premiums and have you covered in case catastrophic health emergencies arise. Many folks carry high deductible plans these days. More employers are offering HDHP’s and they’re widely available on the healthcare marketplace. DPC helps alleviate the biggest stressor that come with these plans — the inflated, hidden, out of pocket costs for every interaction within the fee for service healthcare system. Even the most comprehensive, gold-standard low-deductible plans include co-pays and other hidden costs, yet still cost several hundred dollars more a month than our membership. By choosing a more affordable, high-deductible plan and pairing with DPC, you can save money while maintaining access to the highest quality, transparent healthcare available.

  • If you don’t qualify for state medicaid, you may consider a health sharing program as a more affordable way to limit financial risk from unforeseen health expenses. They are not regulated like health insurance and are not required to cover pre-existing conditions or the other mandates from the Affordable Care Act. They are similar to health insurance, but utilize a cooperative model where costs are shared among members in a community. With these caveats in mind, they can still be a reasonable option for those committed to wellness that cannot afford a high deductible insurance plan.

While a PridePoint Health membership provides comprehensive, all-inclusive primary care, the health share community can help to cover larger, more costly medical needs, such as emergency care, hospitalizations, specialty care, and surgeries. A health share and DPC membership combined are typically significantly less than even the most affordable monthly health insurance plans. Health shares had their start 20+ years ago and were initially faith-based, however there are now options with no religious affiliations. Some health shares even include DPC membership reimbursement.

HEALTH & SERVICES

  • While lab draws performed in our private clinic are included at no cost, the costs for running the lab tests are not included in the membership. Some patients prefer to use their insurance to cover the cost of lab testing. For those with lab co-pays or those who are uninsured or underinsured, we negotiate wholesale lab pricing at 80-90% discounts, often making lab work more affordable than it would be if using insurance. Our goal is to provide cost-effective options for all patients.

  • Well-trained primary care physicians can manage up to 90% of your healthcare needs. We use a wide variety of tools to help you with any diagnosis and treatment plan. As board certified primary care physicians, we are trained in broad and diverse methods of managing any particular diagnosis. The biggest tool that we have is time—time to read and understand your diagnosis and do our best work for you. Regardless, we know our scope and when specialty support is needed.

As trusted primary care physicians in the community for several years, we have great working relationships with specialists in the greater Portland area. By partnering with a network of preferred providers, we ensure seamless coordination and access to high-quality diagnostic services and specialist care. Our team will manage all referrals and follow-ups, ensuring continuity of care and timely access to the medical services you need while allowing you to utilize your insurance benefits.

  • By providing better access to your doctor and focusing on prevention, DPC has been shown to reduce hospitalizations for their patients. However if you are hospitalized, we’re still here for you. We can coordinate with the hospitalist team to ensure continuity of care, providing clear documentation of your medical history and current health issues. While we don’t manage your hospital care directly, we’re available to support and collaborate with the team to help ensure a smooth transition and ongoing care when you’re discharged.

  • While we strive to provide our patients with unprecedented access to their physician, including after hours for urgent issues, we are a small practice and cannot always guarantee 24/7 availability. However, you can reach your physician directly via text and phone, and we’ll do our best to address your needs promptly. For non-urgent matters, you can typically expect a response within 1-2 business days—no more waiting days to weeks before hearing back from your physician! We also support our patients 24/7 with after-hours decision tools, ensuring you always have guidance when you need it.

  • While our physicians are well trained to manage chronic pain, we do not prescribe narcotics (opioids) for this purpose. This is due to an abundance of evidence demonstrating a multitude of risks and no long-term benefit in reducing pain or improving one’s functional ability. If you are taking narcotic pain medications and would like to join, you may need to obtain these prescriptions through a pain specialist or we can discuss a safe discontinuation plan. We are experts at guiding patients through closely monitored tapers of their narcotic pain medications and offering non-narcotic pain alternatives. This service is offered on a case by case basis. We can also recommend non-pharmacologic pain therapies, which are safer and typically more effective long-term.

  • We are comfortable managing a variety of mental health conditions and follow the most up to date guidelines. However, managing anxiety with chronic benzodiazepines is outside of our scope as primary care physicians. When patients with persistent anxiety are not responding to adequate trials of 1st, 2nd, 3rd line options, we will typically advise and coordinate a referral to a psychiatrist for the ongoing management of anxiety, PTSD, panic disorder, etc.
