In-home, ‘finger-prick’ lab testing has FDA approval and can be far more convenient, though the sensitivity of these tests for acute HIV infection is inferior to a blood draw by a phlebotomist. This means there’s a higher likelihood to miss an early HIV infection. Many of the big, online PrEP companies are not transparent about this. This matters because patients that have unknowingly acquired HIV and continue on PrEP are at risk for developing viral resistance.
